Langmeier Backup FAQ

Windows changes the drive letters of the backup media - how the data backup still doesn't fail

Who hasn't experienced this? You have set up your data backup carefully, but suddenly the drive letters have changed in Windows. And what happens? The backup fails. Manually adjusting the drive letters in the backup software is time-consuming and frustrating - but there is an easier solution.

Our solution: data backup by disk name

At Langmeier Backup, we recognized this problem early on and have been offering a clever solution for a long time: Instead of drive letters, simply use the disk name as the backup destination. The software then recognizes the data carrier by its name and performs the backup automatically - even if you insert or connect an external data carrier. Drive letters are no longer an obstacle!

Especially for IT supporters: No more unnecessary effort

This problem is particularly common in IT support: A user calls and reports that the backup is no longer working. The supporter then discovers that the drive letters of the external hard disks have changed. If the flexible backup had been set up from the outset using the Langmeier Backup data carrier name, the incident would not have occurred in the first place. A simple solution that saves you and your customers time and stress.

How to activate data backup by volume name in Langmeier Backup

To use data backup by disk name in Langmeier Backup, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open Langmeier Backup and select the desired backup task or create a new one.
  2. Selectthe backup destination by clicking on "Add backup destination".

Langmeier Backup will then automatically ask you if you want to convert the disk letter to a drive name. Click on "Yes" here . This ensures that Langmeier Backup recognizes the data carrier by its name and not by the drive letter.

The name of the data carrier will then be displayed. You can confirm this or, if desired, change it manually. Then click on "OK" to complete the configuration.

Langmeier Backup for Windows

Test the setup

Once you have configured the backup, we recommend performing a test run. Connect the relevant data carrier and start the backup manually. This way you can make sure that everything works correctly and that the backup is carried out as planned - regardless of which drive letter Windows assigns to the data carrier.

By following these steps, your data backup will be much more stable and reliable in future, without you having to worry about changing drive letters.
