To change the OneDrive folder path

OneDrive can adjust the folder path and move it to another location, but OneDrive always enforces the folder name 'OneDrive'. If you want to rename the OneDrive folder and, for example, use the folder D:\Data for OneDrive, you will encounter difficulties because OneDrive will then force D:\Data\OneDrive.

Do you have difficulties changing the folder name of OneDrive? You don't want the folder to be called OneDrive?

You are not alone! Many users not only want to move their OneDrive folder to a different location, but also freely change the default folder name "OneDrive".

In this article, we will show you how you can do this in just a few simple steps.

Step-by-step instructions

To freely change the OneDrive folder path, for example to D:\Data, you need to make some settings in the Windows registry and in the application data.

Here are the steps you should follow:

  1. **Exit OneDrive.

  2. change the OneDrive path in the Windows registry:** Open the registry editor and change the path in the following locations (if the keys exist):

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\UserFolder
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\Personal\UserFolder
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\Business1\UserFolder 3 Update the INI file: Go to the Explorer and enter the following local path in the line for the path:
    • %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings\

Now change to either the Business1 folder for your business OneDrive or the Personal folder for your personal OneDrive.

  3. search here for an INI file that looks similar to the following:**

    • e7d635caba2ab846.ini.

Open this INI file in a text editor and search for the folder path currently used by OneDrive. Change the path to your desired folder path and folder name.

5 Check the cache path: After you have made the changes, make sure that the following keys are also updated in the registry:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\Personal\ScopeIdToMountPointPathCache
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive\Accounts\Business1\ScopeIdToMountPointPathCache

These steps should help you to successfully rename the OneDrive folder. Remember to make all changes carefully to ensure that your OneDrive continues to work smoothly.
