How to prevent error messages when creating a rescue medium on Windows Server

Creating a rescue medium for Windows Server is an essential task to ensure system recovery in an emergency. However, occasionally error messages occur that interrupt the creation process. In this article, we will discuss three possible solutions to effectively bypass these error messages.

Option 1: Copy download URLs from the error message and add them as trusted sites

Blocked downloads are a common cause of error messages when creating a rescue medium on a Windows server. These downloads often originate from URLs that are blocked by the security settings of Internet Explorer.

To resolve this problem, you can extract the URLs from the error message and proceed as follows:

  1. Open Internet Explorer on your server.
  2. Go to Settings -> Security -> Trusted sites. Trusted sites.
  3. Add the URLs displayed in the error message as trusted sites.
  4. Repeat the process of creating the rescue medium.

By adding the URLs as trusted sites, you prevent the download from being blocked and the error message should no longer appear.

Variant 2: Disable enhanced security configuration for Internet Explorer

Windows Server comes with enhanced security configuration (ESC) for Internet Explorer by default. However, this can block access to certain websites and downloads, which can lead to error messages.

To work around this, you can deactivate the enhanced security configuration:

  1. Open the Server Manager on your Windows server.
  2. Click on Local Server.
  3. Search for the setting IE Enhanced Security Configuration and switch it off for administrators and users.

By disabling this security configuration, Internet Explorer can access the required resources without interrupting the rescue media creation process.

Variant 3: Create rescue medium on a Windows 11 desktop

If the methods mentioned above do not lead to the desired result, there is another simple alternative: creating the rescue medium on a Windows 11 desktop PC. Such a rescue medium is fully compatible with Windows Server systems and can be used for recovery.

Proceed as follows:

  1. Install the backup software on a Windows 11 PC.
  2. Create the rescue medium on the desktop PC.
  3. Use the created rescue medium to restore the Windows server.

This method is particularly useful if the server does not have the necessary Internet configuration or authorizations to download the software directly.
