Langmeier Backup FAQ
Create backup to current weekday folder
In Langmeier Backup, backup folders can be created dynamically. This can be used to always back up to the folder of the current day of the week. At the end of the work week, you'll have five backup folders, each with a copy of your data. How to do itClick on a backup item in the main Langmeier Backup window, and write in the following in the "Destination" field (assume E: is your backup drive): E:\Backup from [dddd] After 5 days, your backup folder will look like this: As you can see, the folders in File Explorer are now displayed unsorted. File Explorer can only sort by numbers or by letters in the alphabet. Therefore we ll use the additional variable [w] to prepend the number of the weekday (1 - 7) to the complete backup folder. At the "destination", write in the following (E: is to be replaced again with your correct backup drive): E:\[w] backup from [dddd] Now, if you start a daily backup, your backup drive will look like this after a work week: To synchronize the backup folder, turn on the option "Remove deleted files also on backup media" in the backup job settings: Leave all other options at the default. You will end up with a copy of the then-current data for each past day of the week. Now change the backup media every week for good measure. If you use four different backup media, so in the fifth week you use the first media again, then you can easily always restore your data back to the state of up to four weeks ago. If a file is accidentally deleted, then it can be restored up to four weeks back.
Other examples of variablesWith the variables you can include in the destination folder in this way, you have several options. Below are just a few examples:
Possible date elements in the variables are:
Automatically free up memory when it runs low: The FreeUp optionWith the FreeUp option, the program can automatically delete older backup folders if there is too little storage space. If there is not enough space left on the drive for the backup, the oldest backup folders will be deleted until there is enough space on the backup. The FreeUp option can be specified with any variable.
